Trip to Prague

In Photography, Travel by Turlough O'Shea

I traveled to Prague between the 8th and 11th of December. I’ll be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect before I went. I had heard from several people that it was a lovely place. That’s the extent of it. I suppose in some ways, that’s a good thing, as it lets you form your own opinions of a place without too much external influence.

The whole trip went quite smoothly. No issues getting from the airport to the city or from landing in the city to finding our accommodation. It was dark when I arrived in the city, so I got to see Charles Bridge in it’s lit up glory. Fast forward to the accommodation. We ended up staying on a boat, a boatel to be precise. The whole experience was a bit strange, but it was a nice strange. The city itself is very beautiful. It still has many old structures remaining, or painstakingly renovated.

Some of my favorite places for pictures, and to just be, were around Old Town Square with the Astronomical Clock or Petřín that has the impressive Petřín Lookout Tower perched atop of it. The tower was inspired by the Eiffel Tower. While is is not as tall as the Eiffel Tower, it is actually at a higher elevation thanks to Petřín hill. I also loved walking across Charles Bridge. At one point, it was the only bridge crossing the Vltava River in Prague and has been in place for over 600 years!

One of the most interesting things I took away from the trip is that Oldtown (if not more) used to be at the same level as the river. Over time, what was then street level was filled up to become basement or lower. This was to try and stop the city flooding. It worked to an extent, but the city still has issues with the Vltava river on occasion.

I even got to watch Arsenal beat Olympiacos in the Champions League while I was over. Arsenal won 0-3 which means that thet qualified for the knockout stages of the competition. However, they drew against Barcelona, a tough tie. If you’re in Prague and want to watch some football, or any sport for that matter, check out ExpatsBar. They have several TVs (can put on most matches), friendly staff, good food, cheap drink and a friendly dog! What more could you want?

Below is a slideshow of some images taken around Prague.
